Self-Talk like a Champion
Your self-dialogue can have a direct impact on your perception of the world. When you have a “set-back” in your life do you see the “set-back” as a problem, or as an opportunity for improvement? Do you take “bad news” as “bad news”, or do you take the “bad news” as a “challenge” to overcome? The difference between successful people versus unsuccessful people is often the words they select to describe such situations. The key is to select positive words that inspire you rather than pull you down.
For example, if you can’t find a suitable investment property positive self-talk could include questions or statements such as:
Let’s stay patient and we’ll find the right property.
Are there investment properties better than what I’m looking for?
How can I change my search criteria to find the right property?
On the other hand negative self-talk could include statements such as:
There are no investment properties out there.
Investing requires money that I don’t have.
I have terrible luck. I’ll never find anything.
In some markets it can be tough to find a feasible investment property. If you don’t have the right mind set you may give up to early, or even worse pull the trigger on a property that doesn’t make financial sense. Thinking that you can’t find anything better can create a false sense of urgency that can lead you to making bad deals. Lastly, it’s important to be cognizant of other factors that affect emotions. Making a deliberate effort to be positive is helpful, but it needs to be accompanied by other measures which have a significant impact on your emotions such as vitamin nutrition, regular exercise, and good sleep.
