Become Proactive to Create Lasting Life Changes

In Steven Covey’s National bestselling book “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” being proactive is defined as focusing on things that you can actually do something about, and it’s through this focus that one’s sphere of influence grows.  Meanwhile, being reactive is defined as focusing on things outside of one’s control.  This negative focus results in blaming others and an increased sense of victimization, which lead to a person’s sphere of influence shrinking.  Below are three practical tips on how to be proactive in your own life:

1.  Be Solution Focused

To be a good problem solver focus on what you can control and focus specifically on finding solutions.Having a laser focus on the end result can help you to avoid wasting time and reach your goals faster.  If you have a team of people you’re working with you’ll be leading by example.

2.  Goal Setting

Set clear defined goals for yourself that you can measure progress against and determine if you’ve reached your goals.  For example, don’t set a goal of just eating better and being healthy.  Instead break it down to goals which are both specific and realistic for caloric intake, weight loss, exercise, and body mass index.  Though this article is about being individually pro-active it can also help to have an accountability partner.  An accountability partner is someone that can provide coaching in terms of helping you keeping your commitments.

3.  Consistency

It’s not realistic to get things right the first time around.  Take steps every day to move towards your goals.  When you encounter a tough problem what you’re reaction?  If you’re taking the appropriate actions what may seem like small steps initially can yield massive results with consistent action.

Most people want to make a significant change in at least one area of their lives, but are caught up in feelings of inadequacy and helplessness that prevent them from moving forward.  There is nothing like taking consistent and massive action towards well defined goals, to break down the walls that have been holding you back.  Adapting a proactive personality is a critical first step in making a powerful and lasting life change.
